Healing Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a chronic illness characterized by endometrial tissue growing in places other than the uterus. As the tissue builds up and sheds in relation to the menstrual cycle, the blood has nowhere to drain. It ends up on surrounding organs, causing swelling, inflammation, and pain. As this happens over and over again, scar tissue and adhesions develop.

Symptoms of Endometriosis

Here are some common symptoms:
  • Menstrual pain
  • Heavy periods and irregular bleeding
  • Painful sexual intercourse
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Reduced fertility
  • Lower back pain

Why see an Acupuncturist?

Western medicine’s treatment of Endometriosis (i.e., hormone therapy, birth control pills, and surgery) can have dangerous side effects. While only dealing with minor symptoms, Western medicine often does not get to the root of the problem. In addition, managing pain caused by Endometriosis with traditional medicine is often insufficient.

If you are looking for an effective, side effect free treatment for endometriosis, try Chinese medicine. It has been used to alleviate the above listed symptoms for thousands of years (before Endometriosis was given a name). Endometriosis can be successfully treated and even cured through Chinese Medicine techniques such as acupuncture, moxibustion, low-level laser therapy, and herbs. In addition, it is important to be on a healthy diet and manage stress.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a relaxing therapy that promotes healing and pain management by stimulating acupuncture points and releasing naturally healing chemicals into the body. This therapeutic technique:

  • Rebalances the body’s systems
  • Regulates the menstrual cycle
  • Assists the flow of energy
  • Reduces painful menstruation
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Provides relaxation and stress reduction
  • Improves fertility
Treating Endometriosis with acupuncture takes time, so acupuncture should be ongoing for several months. For example, treatment may occur until there are at least three normal menstrual cycles. Then, Chinese herbs with an occasional acupuncture treatment can often manage symptoms.

Moxibustion

During Moxibustion, the heat from a burning herb increases circulation in the pelvic region and promotes healing. This type of therapy is beneficial for certain types of endometriosis.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbal medicine is another form of therapy that:

  • Heals your body with essential nutrients and vitamins
  • Decreases heavy bleeding
  • Balances hormone levels
  • Alleviates pain
Herbal therapy is prescribed for each individual’s specific condition. Don’t worry about the taste; through Springer Acupuncture your herbal medicine comes in pill form.

Low-level Laser Therapy

Low-level lasers:

  • Regenerate tissue
  • Decrease inflammation
  • Alleviate pain
  • Improve blood circulation
  • Strengthen the immune system
It can be very helpful to have laser therapy on consecutive days of intense pain and then two times a week for a few weeks. At that point, the acupuncturist reevaluates and determines a treatment plan that is most beneficial for you.

Health and Diet

Good nutrition is an important step in becoming healthy. During your first session, your acupuncturist will discuss foods to avoid as well as other health recommendations. These recommendations decrease inflammation and other symptoms.

Relax

Stress prompts endometriosis symptoms. During stressful times, you may have noticed more painful menstruation with heavier bleeding. When stressed, your body gets tense, causing hormonal imbalance and stagnation in the uterus. Stagnation leads to inflammation, heavy bleeding, and pain. Even if this is corrected with surgery, if stress is not managed better, the cycle will continue.
